A gracEmail subscriber who is a pastor asks how to answer parishioners who inquire about the morality of masturbation.

The mere physical act of masturbation does not necessarily involve sinful thinking, and I do not know anything in the Bible which says it is wrong when it does not. In that case masturbation can be simply a legitimate and God-given means of sexual release and for avoiding fornication and adultery.
The Bible contains no direct specific teaching on this subject. The sin of Onan, whose name is sometimes associated with the practice, was not that at all, but was rather his refusal to impregnate the wife of his dead brother in fulfillment of social custom and his father's express command (Gen. 38:6-10).
Because masturbation is convenient and provides immediate pleasure, it can become a substitute for the unselfish, mature relationship that results in premium sexual fulfillment in marriage. It might also be addictive for some people, for whom abstinence may provide an occasion for developing self-control, which is a Christian virtue and a fruit of the Spirit (2 Pet. 1:6; Gal. 5:23). My friend Jim McGuiggan has written a very helpful and more detailed discussion of this subject which you can read by clicking here.
