DUAL CITIZENSHIP
Our lesson has two texts, for those who like for a lesson to have a text. One is John 17:6ff. In this passage, Jesus prays an intercessory prayer for His disciples whom He is about to bodily leave upon His return to the Father. Although He is going to send the Holy Spirit as the Encourager or Comforter, Jesus feels a burden for His followers' welfare in a hostile world. He prays that God will keep or protect them from the world, though they will be living in the world.
The other text is Philippians 3:18 -- 4:1. Here Paul describes two mind-sets which are found in most churches, and certainly in all communities where there are Christians. Some have their mind set on this present world. True believers have a mind set on heaven. Their citizenship is not in this world -- it is in heaven where Christ is. Again we see the idea of living in the world physically, while living apart from it in allegiance.
Body
I. This world is not our home (Hebrews 11:8-10).
A. Matthew 13:22 -- Jesus speaks of the cares of this world, which hinder many who begin to serve Him.
B. II Corinthians 4:4 -- Paul speaks of the god of this world, which is Satan. He blinds the eyes of those who do not believe the gospel.
C. I John 2:15ff -- John says that this world and all that belongs to it will be destroyed. Those who do the will of God will live forever.
D. I Corinthians 7:29-31 -- Paul points to the same truth as John above. This present system is passing away. Let us adjust our minds to that fact.
II. We confess to being pilgrims, therefore, living in a land that is not really our permanent dwelling (Hebrews 11:13, 14).
III. This is an incentive to right living.
A. II Corinthians 7:1.
B. II Peter 3:11-18.
C. I John 3:1-3.
Conclusion
Since these things are true, we should draw certain implications for our lives here on this earth.
I. Do not expect your reward or acclaim here.
II. Do adjust your sense of values, in keeping with what is passing and what is eternal.
III. Do watch your stewardship of possessions, aware that they are not permanent but on loan for another's use (see Matthew 6:19-21). Live for others, not for self.
IV. Do choose God instead of gods (see Matthew 6:24).
